Kaitlin's Lesson Plan: Measuring and Estimating Lengths in Standard Units
Objective:
The students will be able to estimate and measure lengths in standard units of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. The students will also be able to become more familiar using interactive online tools.
CT State Common Core Standards:
2. MD.A.1: “Measurement and Data- “Measure and estimate lengths in standard units”
-measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter stick, and measuring tapes.
2.MD.A.3: Measurement and Data- “Measure and estimate lengths in standard units.”
-Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters
Educational Technology Tools:
1) Thinglink.com: Worksheet for measuring length in inches
The students will use this to engage in practice measuring real life objects in inches. This technology puts a spin on the usual worksheet that a student might see in class, because the interactive "Tags" let the students see an actual photograph of the illustrated object and also presents the student with the answer after they either measure it on their own.
2) Voki: Use these directions in correspondence with the smart notebook interactive ruler. The students can use this to get a clear idea of what they are expected to do once they begin working on the SMARTnotebook presentation. Listening to the icon give directions will not only help make their expectations more clear, it will also put a fun twist on listening to instructions in an engaging way.
3) SMARTnotebook: Use the interactive ruler!
The students can use this interactive ruler to estimate and measure the objects without using a worksheet like they most likely use very often. Although the objects are not physically tangible, the students can still move and manipulate them on the SMARTboard screen to actively engage in measuring after they estimate the length of each object in inches.
